  • Abstract
The pressures on the US government to downsize its immense defense production complex in the wake of easing Cold War tensions and their likely impact on the economy are discussed. Arguments for and against government intervention to boost national and local economies as defense funds dwindle and jobs disappear are examined, and congressional actions are enumerated. Ways of maintaining high-quality military capability in this altered environment are considered.<>
