Abstract :
The authors show that starting from the appropriate linear combinations of LP modes, the weakly guiding approximation of the hybrid modes can be easily obtained without any reference to the rigorous vector modes. The analysis uses E. Snitzer´s criterion (J. Opt. Soc. Amer., vol.51, p.491-8, 1961), applying it to the fields corresponding to the appropriate linear combination of LP modes.<>
