Abstract
Edge writing phenomena in narrow track recording on both well-oriented and planar isotropic thin-film recording media are studied by numerical micromagnetic modeling. Multiple dibit transition pairs are simulated and statistical properties are analyzed. The magnetization patterns of the simulated dibits are studied as well as the magnetic pole density distributions. It is found that, for the well-oriented film, the magnetic pole density distribution of a written transition at the edges of the track is shifted in the recording track direction relative to the on-track transition position. With a normal writing field, the pole distribution extends significantly beyond the edges of the recording head. In the planar isotropic film, the pole density distribution at the transitions does not extend beyond the edges of the recording head even though the side writing is significantly wider. Pole density significantly fluctuates at the track edges, constituting the edge noise and the side band is a truly erased band
