Abstract :
La(Co1-xFex)13 (x=0-0.4) alloys have been found to absorb substantial amounts of nitrogen. The unit cell volumes were increased by 8.3-8.9% after nitrogenation. Curie temperature and magnetic moment are decreased by nitrogenation. This negative effect of nitrogenation on magnetic properties in the La(CoFe) 13 system is ascribed to the weakening of exchange when the interatomic spacing is increased by nitrogenation. It is concluded that properties of significance for permanent magnet fabrication are degraded by nitrogenation
