Abstract :
The electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) was downloaded from mainframe to a computer. The details of compiling, linking, memory requirements, and execution time for a mainframe and a personal computer running this software are compared. Two case studies are presented comparing the performances of EMTP on a mainframe and a personal computer. This research establishes the viability of using this software on a personal computer for power system transient computations. Appreciable memory savings are found in the PC version. The compiling time for the software in the PC is found to be around two hours. The run times for programs are found to be satisfactory. Directions for future research are discussed
