Abstract :
The authors show how variations of a magnetic field along a cylindrical or spherical axis are effected for both longitudinal and transverse orientations. Field profiles in cylindrical structures of both orientations and various cross sections (square, octagonal, and circular) are compared with each other and with a spherical shell source with a tapered longitudinal field. Methods of coping with field irregularities arising from architectural and materials compromises forced by operational peculiarities of particular devices are described and compared
