Abstract
The history of energy management systems (EMSs) is sketched, and a conceptual model of an EMS is presented. A centralized architecture that is typical of several available, is described. Clustered and distributed architectures are discussed. Each of the architectures is compared to the conceptual model and judged as to its responsiveness, expandability, and maintainability.<>
