Abstract :
In recent years, the quality of the picture displayed by commercial television receivers has been improved to the extent that further improvement is difficult to achieve within the framework of existing display techniques. Additional improvement could be obtained through improvements in color picture tubes, better signal processing, and through modification of current NTSC standards. However, modification of NTSC standards may not be acceptable unless the changes are compatible with the circuitry in the receivers already installed in millions of homes and do not make these receivers obsolete. Alternate approaches are being explored that do not require a change in transmission standards, but provide an improvement in observed picture quality through the elimination of certain artifacts in the picture.
