Abstract
The gradient matrix has come into wide use during the past decade. When gradients are taken with respect to symmetric matrices in the context of optimization problems, special care must be taken to insure the validity of the results. This note considers the necessary conditions of the matrix minimum principle [1] when the system matrix is constrained to be symmetric.
