Abstract
The role of customer premises equipment (CPE) in the deployment of intelligent network capabilities is discussed. The evolution of CPE from traditional telephones, PBX switches, PC adjuncts, and key systems to high-grade audio, video and television media, and advanced consumer electronics systems is described. Future protocol requirements of the CPE and the providing of an interface to the user regardless of service type or origin by the CPE are also discussed.<>
