Abstract :
This study is based on a chapter of the IEEE tutorial Fundamentals of Supervisory Systems, which focuses on remote terminal unit (RTU) applications to the power system. The RTU is presented as a set of subsystems or elements, not favoring any one design or concept, but concentrating on application requirements. Specific design requirements can be found in the various ANSI/IEEE standards, most specifically ANSI/IEEE C37.1. This study is based on RTU designs incorporating one or more microprocessors, and accompanying software (firmware). Microprocessors were added to RTUs to reduce product cost, improve flexibility, and enhance performance, which also reduced the impact of supplying units with various protocols.<>
