Abstract
This paper brings to a focus the major current limitation of the application of thermal neutron scattering in condensed matter research - source intensity. The pulsed spallation source provides a means of gaining an order of magnitude increase over the best steady-state reactors, while at the same time it opens up a much broader, and potentially very rich region of excitations to neutron scattering.
