Abstract :
This paper describes an algorithm for the decomposition of a second-order nonlinear differential equation into a gradient system and a conservative system. The method is restricted to polynomial-type nonlinearities. The paper broadens the class of systems that can be analyzed by the decomposition method of Evans to which references are given.
