            Abstract : 
The paper shows the equivalence of propagating plane waves due to a source through a layered medium using the recursive propagation approach and the slab approach. It points to errors in equations (2.4.15) and (2.4.16) of a book by one of the authors (Chew, W.C., "Waves and Fields in Inhomogeneous Media", Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1990) and corrects them. In addition, it proves that both of these solutions satisfy the reciprocity relationship. Furthermore, a solution for odd and even symmetric sources in a layered medium is derived.
