  • Abstract
The authors describe a comparison performed between two types of CdTe detectors operating in different configurations, considering the possibility of constructing array detectors for medical and industrial applications, and the development of a multi-probe matrix array for use in astrophysics, such as for the detection of 511-keV annihilation radiation. The main interest was in the development and optimization of small probes with a cross section of a few square millimeters having high efficiency and good energy resolution of 500/700 keV photons. A mounting has been developed which optimizes the efficiency and improves the time resolution without penalizing the energy resolution to any great extent. The experimental work has been performed in conjunction with mathematical simulations making use of a three-dimensional Monte Carlo code
