Abstract
Some industry actions in connection with HDTV (high-definition television) standards are suggested. It is believed that the best practical course of action is to encourage vendors to work toward interoperability and extensibility to the maximum extent possible within the framework of their existing developments and on a voluntary basis. It is concluded that the United States is very fortunate in having achieved a lead in the development of digital compression systems, and that this lead should not be lost by striving for more standardization than the industries can agree upon within a reasonable time
