Abstract :
The author summarises the significant technological developments in colour television broadcasting over the past 60 years. The improvements in equipment for colour television and the introduction of satellite broadcasting are described. The systems designed for high definition television (HDTV) are not compatible with existing receivers. A possible evolutionary process is therefore outlined that would enable users to phase the purchase of new receiving equipment for direct reception from satellites or cable networks.<>
