Abstract :
An analysis is carried out of the distribution of the electric potential and the electric field on the steel/soil contact surface of a buried pipe, caused by various coating defects. Electric potentials and electric fields are evaluated by means of a numerical computation procedure based on the finite-element method; in the calculations, a two-dimensional approximation is assumed and the effects of polarisation are neglected. The results of the analysis performed in the paper provide information, on which defects must be considered the most dangerous from the corrosion aspect, and show the effects on the electric potential distribution of the defect location on the cross-section of the pipe.<>
