Abstract :
The author considers rapid acceleration of circumstantial rates of change, concentrating particularly on population and information technology, both of which it suggests are correlated through rising expectations. It argues that population growth is a symptom rather than a cause of present difficulties, shows information technology to be a critical influence on future development, and suggests the engineering professions need vision to understand what is happening, if they are to participate fully in shaping the future.<>
