Abstract :
Beams of sub-atomic particles, particularly of protons and other heavy ions, may be used for safe, noninvasive diagnosis in medicine. These radiations supplement those of the electromagnetic spectrum and of sound. With their aid radiographs of unusually high contrast are obtained for the visualization and differentiation of the body tissues at very low doses. The method appears practical for use in hospitals and has potential for screening purposes. This report sumarizes the basic aspects of the method and some results obtained by its use, with comments on its potential.
