Abstract
Concept and design of a magnetic linear accelerator to accelerate a 0.1-1.0 gm superconducting solenoid projectile to a velocity exceeding 105 m/s are presented. Such a device could serve as ignitor for inertial confinement fusion. We propose a magnetic linac in which the longitudinal acceleration elements are individually controlled. Transverse and rotational motions are stable. Accelerator and projectile elements are described. We find no obstacle to development of this concept.
