Abstract
Gilbert/Commonwealth (G/C) has developed a reference design of an auxiliary electric power system for use in 500 MW to 800 MW coal-fired plants. As a reference design, it may be adapted to a wide range of variables such as climate, fuel, and major equipment manufacturers. A typical 650 MW unit is described along with its major equipment parameters and design layout, construction, and operation. Whenever the design varies with different megawatt ratings, these variations will be described. The application of a generator load break switch is presented. Its use allows the generator stepup transformer to be the source of auxiliary power for unit startup and shutdown.
