Abstract
The paper describes a method which has been used to compare the frequency characteristics of two power line models taking into account the multiconductor and unbalanced nature of practical power systems. For a certain class of problem the question arises as to which of these two models provides a suitable basis for analysis in keeping with acceptable limits related to accuracy and computational efficiency. Such is the case when evaluating the performance of power line carrier in distribution systems, an area which is receiving considerable attention because of increased activity directed towards improved energy use management. As a matter of example, therefore, the problem of representing a secondary distribution line section is taken and the results of computation are presented to show the limits of frequency and physical length within which a lunped parameter model can be applied, with ensuing advantages, to the analysis of distribution power line carrier.
