Abstract
The design of an aluminum underground secondary cable that significantly reduces field failures caused by mechanical damage to the insulation is described. It consists of a self-sealing layer between the conductor and the insulation. If the insulation is cut or punctured through to the conductor, the opening is filled by the self-sealing material, and corrosion due to AC electrolysis is prevented or greatly inhibited. The design is described, and results of comparative tests of existing self-sealing cables and the present design are reported.<>
