Abstract :
This instrument measures the "focusing strength," fgdz, of a quadrupole by moving a bundle of wires across its bore and recording the integrals of the two voltage loops generated by each stroke, together with the length of the stroke. A discussion of errors is given that indicates that it is possible to do .01% measurements upon electromagnets of moderately good quality with the device if amplitudes and phases of non-quadrupole field components are known from other measurements.
