Abstract :
A new relation between the controllability (observability) matrix and Gramian for any stable realization is used to enable the development of an algorithm for obtaining a minimal balanced realization directly from the transfer function matrix. The algorithm employs the Markov parameters and a positive definite symmetric matrix which is composed solely from the coefficients of the least common denominator polynomial of the transfer function matrix.
