Abstract :
The mechanism and purpose of the industrial standards systems of planned economy countries are fundamentally different to that accepted in any Western country. Here the purpose, organisation, and use of industrial standards are contrasted in a planned economy country (Poland), and a market economy country (Britain). The structure and operation of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the East European Comecon Standards Institute are compared, and proposals made for better collaboration.
