Abstract
Considerable experimental effort has been expended in the last three decades to elucidate the factors which determine the efficiency which the human inspector can be expected to maintain in his quality control role. This effort would now seem to have reached a stage where human factors expertise can make a significant contribution to inspectors´ performance. Much recent research has applied itself directly to the industrial context. This work is reviewed and the implications of its results discussed.
