Abstract :
An analytical study of the propagation properties of a Love-type magneto-surface-acoustic-wave (MSAW) in highly magnetostrictive alloy films separated by insulating layers is presented. It is found that a Love-type MSAW propagating in multilayered media exhibits large velocity controllability with applied magnetic field and small amounts of propagation loss arising from eddy currents. The range of velocity controllability approaches the limiting values obtained in nondissipative magnetic insulators when the number of the insulating layers N is increased (N⩾15 in the present case). These characteristics are very favorable for constructing MSAW devices with highly functional characteristics
