Abstract
Questions about the adequacy of arc-proofing have arisen in connection with underground systems using XLPE-insulated cables, because of an increasing number of arc faults. Extensive testing at available short-circuit-current levels of 8 kA is described. The results indicate that a minimum safe distance of 50 cm should be maintained for nonarc-proofed equipment. For equipment protected with arc-resistant tape, this distance can be substantially reduced. Standard tests based on the use of faulted XLPE cable ends are proposed to verify arc-proofing effectiveness and the arc-resistance of materials
