Abstract
The definition of standards are manifold. The key words in such meanings are agreements and common consent. As a general rule, to be considered a standard, buy-in is required from others. And the others, e.g. companies, typically will only go along if they feel it will benefit them. Thus, worthwhile standards are usually good (not necessarily great) engineering solutions that allow the users to make money.
