Abstract :
On 15 December 1981 the IEEE Control System Society (CSS) formed an ad hoc Comittee on Human Rights. A consensus was reached that human rights is an issue that the CSS should be involved with, and, at the 13 June 1982 CSS Ad Com meeting, the following motion was made: The ad hoc Human Rights Committee be immediately made a Standing Committee of the CSS, with the name Human Rights Committee (this committee shall enjoy all of the privileges of a Standing Committee). This motion was passed by a very large majority of the CSS Ad Com. The rest of this report describes: (1) considerations leading to the preceding motion; (2) a recent flagrant violation of human rights, presented as ??information?? to CSS members; and (3) the work ahead for the committee.
