Abstract
A design approach for a nuclear power plant feedwater control system is presented. Manual operations and high probability actuator failures are addressed by the controller modes. Boolean variables are used in the observer in modeling process structure changes, such as pumps being manually taken offline and control valves failing wide open. The observer generates estimates of unknown plant disturbances which are used in a modified feedforward control scheme. The modified feedforward control makes the design of many modes of control analytically tractable. Results from testing the controller design on a high order, detailed plant model are presented.
