Abstract :
A 1300-nm Fabry-Perot laser diode (LD) transmitter module with a GaAs MESFET LD driver has been developed. To realize the direct modulation of the Fabry-perot LD at 5 Gb/s, the LD was connected to the LD driver by wire bonding. With the new transmitter module, a repeater spacing of 7 km has been achieved at 5 Gb/s by using a conventional single-mode fiber and a receiver that uses GaAs ICs. The p-i-n photodiode (PD) receiver sensitivity at 5 Gb/s has been improved by about 1.7 dB over a repeater spacing of 2 km, from the value recorded with a previous transmitter configuration.<>
