Abstract :
Intense ion beam heating of targets has been assessed as a function of the orientation of the target with respect to the beam. A Monte Carlo code has been used to determine the relative energy deposited per unit mass in targets normal to and at 45° to the beam axis. Assumptions about the distribution of ion trajectories used in the calculations are checked by comparison with thermal images of targets exposed to the beam. Peak energy deposition per unit mass is found to be comparable for both target orientations
