Abstract
The use of a single-stage photomultiplier followed by a low-noise amplifier has made it possible to obtain cosmic ray muon pulse height spectra from F2 type lead glass with a resolution closely comparable to that achieved with a conventional photomultiplier. Tests in axial magnetic fields show satisfactory behaviour over the range 0.05 Tesla to at least 1 Tesla. A further similar device designed for transverse field use has operated up to 0.8 Tesla at angles approaching 700 to the device longitudinal axis.
