Abstract
The linear problem of determining wave electric fields from measured perturbed particle distribution is considered. Previous work is extended to consider the case of arbitrary wave structure transverse to the magnetic field. The calculations are limited to electrostatic waves, although the ideas extend naturally to electromagnetic waves, and are illustrated in the one-dimensional case using data taken by laser-induced fluorescence
