Abstract
A new receiver for Miller-squared encoded signals that has a 50% lower operating speed than its predecessors, which reconstruct the encoded signal before decoding the original data, is described. The reduction is achieved by using partial-response techniques to detect a linearly transformed and decimated version of the encoded signal, from which the original data can be recovered by means of a simple decoder. Simulation results for stylized recording systems with differentiating and magnetoresistive playback heads are presented. Simulations confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach and indicate that the performance of the receiver improves upon that of its conventional counterpart under certain conditions
