Abstract
The orientation of high spin nuclei may be estimated from the angular distribution of the deexcitation gamma rays in a 4 pi multi detector system. The calculation is given for those cases in which the initial spin of the decaying nucleus is known to be perpendicular to the beam axis. The method is demonstrated on measurements in the Oak Ridge Spin Spectrometer. It is also shown how the calculation can be modified to correct for missing detectors in the crystal ball.
