Abstract
A lower bound for the scan period that maximises the probability of maintaining target track for a uniformly scanning radar is determined. The value is orders of magnitude greater than common scan periods, and therefore this is not a reasonable optimality criterion. The result is valid for all target cross-section fluctuation models.
