    A performance analysis of the lp norm back propagation algorithm for adaptive equalisation with 1⩽p⩽2 is presented. Expected learning gains in both training mode and decision directed mode are analysed taking into account the effect of p. Simulation results for convergence properties and bit error rate (BER) performance are consistent with the analysis
