Abstract
The meaning of ´real-time system´ is defined, and two types are identified: soft real-time systems, for which performance is degraded but not destroyed by failure to meet response time constraints, and hard real-time systems, for which failure to meet response time constraints leads to system failure. The concepts of events and determinism are examined.<>
