Technique for measurement of HCN-laser linewidth

The spectrum of the 311 and 337 ¿m lines of an HCN laser is examined with a high-resolution spectrum analyser. Although the outputs have spectral widths of the order of 100kHz, the spectral width of the difference frequency is less than 5kHz. The observed spectra widths are caused by mechanical instability.
