Abstract :
The electromagnetic interaction of picosecond pulses with a metal-backed magnetic slab is discussed. The medium is nonlinear in the sense that the layer responds with different magnetic permeabilities with respect to the rising and falling edges of the applied picosecond pulses. Nonlinear and relaxation effects are readily identified in the reflected signal. A change in polarity of the reflected signal, for example, implies hysteretic behavior in magnetic materials.
