Abstract :
The automation of repetitive manufacturing processes is discussed in the context of a widely perceived diminishing of a so called competitive edge in the US. The goal is to provide a framework for thinking about automation in the US factory. The opportunities, risks, and issues are discussed. Some observations on how to approach an automation project are made.<>
