Abstract :
The Universities Funding Council in Britain recently published a new assessment giving quality ratings in the range 1-5 for research at each university department. This exercise is expected to have a direct effect on earnings and thus attracts great interest. The author explains the workings of the process of allocating grades and notes some lessons that can perhaps be drawn from the exercise
