Abstract
Although emitter-collector shorts may result from a number of processing problems, the phenomenon known as `pipes´ represents one of the most interesting and most troublesome sources of such electrical shorts in bipolar circuits. In this review paper, several observations on the nature and causes of pipes are discussed, as well as means to evaluate their incidence and to control their occurrence.
