Abstract
The compatibility of a set of design requirements for a quadrupole electromagnet with a given pulsed power converter can be judged based on the stored magnetic energy, which depends on the magnetic length leff and on the aperture radius r. In this work, we combine existing analytical relations to describe these dependencies. A comparison of the obtained analytical description with a set of two-dimensional magnet designs confirms that the stored magnetic energy of a non-saturated quadrupole electromagnet scales with leff-1 and r4. With this result, we develop a new visual tool to quickly assess the compatibility between a set of design requirements for a quadrupole electromagnet and the operation range of a given power converter specified as the output current as a function of the inductance load.
