  • Abstract
    A truly variational method for analysing polarised modes in optical rib waveguides is presented. The new method exploits recent advances in rib waveguide analysis where the use of effective widths simplifies the semiconductor/air interface. Results obtained for both TE and TM polarisation are validated using benchmark results produced using established methods.
