Abstract
The achievements of Alexander Bain are relatively unknown. Bain was born and died in near poverty; yet in the early 1850s telegraph lines exploiting his electric telegraph patent were in operation in the United States in competition with those of Morse. Besides inventions in the field of electric telegraphy Bain was the first person to construct an electromagnetic clock and to devise a facsimile transmission system
